The Healing Arts program at UNMC and Nebraska Medicine aims to transform the health care experience by connecting people with the power of art. We believe the arts also can create a compassionate, supportive and inspirational environment for our patients, their families and staff.

Autumn Leaves Persian Installation
Persians by Dale Chihuly are blown-glass rondels in swirling, irregular shapes. Here, the opulent golds, oranges and reds harken the colors of autumn, and the undulating forms are reminiscent of leaves blowing in the wind.
Botanic 2
In Botanic 2 by Jennifer Steinkamp, animated flowering plants are blown by an unseen force, breaking apart inside the circular framework of the video. The animations loop forward and back, transitioning between breaking apart and coming back together.
Center Peace
Center Peace by Kevin Box is made of painted cast aluminum, with the "paper" unfolding into a star, its crumpled edges remind us of the chaos in the past but the center is defined by peace.
Chihuly Sanctuary
The Chihuly Sanctuary is the cornerstone of the Healing arts Program at UNMC and Nebraska Medicine. It is the culmination of Dale Chihuly’s decades of experiments in light, space and form.
Colors of the Prairie
In Colors of the Prairie, Matthew Placzek incorporates elements of nature, such as the prairie grasses of Nebraska, to create soothing works of art to help patients and their families heal physically, spiritually and emotionally.
Howard G. Buffett Gallery
This hallway features 22 powerful photographs by Howard G. Buffett, many of which come from his 40 Chances series documenting agriculture, conservation and wildlife around the world.
Ikebana Glass on Glass Paintings
Glass on Glass by Dale Chihuly fluently articulates the artist’s mastery of the transmission of light through transparent media.
Mille Fiori, exterior
The outside portion of Mille Fiori features an array of Dale Chihuly’s whimsical, nature-inspired, blown-glass elements, including reeds, herons, and grass clusters.
Mille Fiori, interior
Combining brilliantly colored, flora-like elements, Dale Chihuly creates spectacular gardens of glass, a manifestation of his lifelong fascination with nature and flowers, which was inspired by his mother’s passion for gardening.
Niijima Floats
Dale Chihuly's large spheres—up to forty inches in diameter and weighing sixty pounds— are named for small green and blue Japanese fishing floats he found as a child on the shores of Puget Sound.
On Rays of Time
On Rays of Time by Amy Westover consists of three separate “sunbeams” made of multilayered, geometric pieces of colored cast glass and metal that angle through the space from floor to ceiling designed to embody the sunlight peeking through a window or cloud.
Orange and Yellow Hornet Sconce, Rising Sun Sconce Wall
Dale Chihuly’s sconces are wall installations composed of blown-glass elements that are created in response to a specific environment.
Organic Wood Benches and Planter
Matthew Placzek's organic and nature-inspired benches and planter create a calming and reflective setting for patients, visitors and medical professionals.
Reflection Room Crystal Sconces
The Reflection Room Crystal Sconces by Dale Chihuly are composed of approximately 2,000 crystalline glass forms, amassed within the Reflection Room's cone-like architectural form
Sapphire Icicle Tower
The Sapphire Icicle Tower, which stands at 11 feet, exemplifies Dale Chihuly’s desire to mass color on a steel armature for dramatic effect. Its approximately 325 pieces create what he calls “a core of color.”
Search
Search is a creative fusion of art and science, described by artist Jun Kaneko as endeavoring to "bring positive energy, inspiration and hope" to all who visit the Buffett Cancer Center.
Spring Sonata - Iris Garden
In Spring Sonata by Matthew Placzek, each monumental iris is unique, part of variety of curved floral silhouettes joined by the wavy and curling lines of the leaves. The dancing, lit butterflies add to the movement and connect the groupings of flowers.
Sunrise Perisan Columns
With the ceiling-hung Sunrise Persian Columns by Dale Chihuly, the blossoming shapes focus and reflect light in such a way that their open forms illuminate architectural spaces and environments.
The Hope Tapestry
In The Healing Tapestry and The Hope Tapestry, Mary Zicafoose ties the words hope and healing in multiple languages together through the binding of fibers, figuratively connecting individuals of all backgrounds in their aspirations and fears relating to their cancer treatment.
The Waltz
The Waltz by Suzy Taekyung Kim is a multi-layered painting that facilitates a sense of healing and refuge. Spontaneous pops of color are used to convey joy and vitality.
